A waffle maker is one of those gadgets that’s brilliant right up until the moment you have to clean it. Baked-on batter, greasy plates, crumbs in every groove — and you can’t just chuck it in the sink like a frying pan. Here’s how I clean mine properly, keep the non-stick coating alive for years, and rescue it when batter has welded itself to the plates. It takes about five minutes.

The golden rules (read these first)

  • Always unplug it and let it cool. Cleaning a hot waffle maker is both dangerous and a good way to ruin the coating.
  • Never submerge it in water. The electrical parts live inside — dunking it can wreck the machine (and is a shock risk). Wipe, don’t soak.
  • No metal, no abrasives, no harsh chemicals. Metal spatulas, scouring pads and oven cleaner all strip non-stick coatings. Soft cloths, plastic or wood only.

The everyday clean (after each use)

  1. Unplug and let it cool until just warm — warm actually helps lift grease.
  2. Brush or tip out loose crumbs.
  3. Wipe the plates with a soft cloth or paper towel dampened with warm water and a tiny bit of mild dish soap.
  4. Get into the grooves with a soft toothbrush if needed.
  5. Wipe once more with a clean damp cloth to remove any soap, then dry it.

Do this every time and you’ll rarely need anything more.

If your plates come out (removable plates)

Lucky you — this is the easy life. Pop the plates out, wash them in warm soapy water (or the dishwasher if the manufacturer says they’re dishwasher-safe), dry fully, and clip them back in. It’s the single biggest reason removable-plate models like the Cuisinart WAF-300 are so popular.

Stuck-on or burnt batter

Two methods that actually work, no scrubbing required:

The oil method. Pour a little cooking oil onto the caked-on batter and leave it for about five minutes. The oil softens it so it wipes straight off with a paper towel.

The steam method. Lay a damp cloth or a few damp paper towels across the plates, close the lid, and let the trapped steam loosen the burnt bits for a couple of minutes. Then wipe away with a damp cloth. (Do this while the plates are just warm, not scorching.)

Deep clean for greasy, stained plates

When a wipe isn’t cutting it, reach for baking soda:

  1. Mix baking soda and water roughly 1:1 into a paste.
  2. Dab it onto the greasy, stained areas.
  3. Work it gently into the grooves with a soft toothbrush.
  4. Leave it 10–15 minutes.
  5. Wipe clean with a damp cloth until no residue remains, then dry.

Baking soda is mild enough not to hurt the coating but abrasive enough to shift baked-on grease.

Don’t forget the outside

Wipe the exterior and the hinge area with a damp cloth to clear splatters and drips. A dry cloth over the whole thing at the end stops water sitting anywhere it shouldn’t.

What NOT to do

  • Don’t use metal utensils or steel wool — instant scratches.
  • Don’t soak or rinse the whole unit under the tap.
  • Don’t use oven cleaner, bleach or other harsh chemicals.
  • Don’t put it away damp — dry it first to avoid smells and rust on hinges.

How often should you clean it?

A quick wipe after every use, and a baking-soda deep clean every month or so if you use it a lot. Keep on top of the little cleans and you’ll almost never need the big one.

FAQ

Can you use soap on a waffle maker?

Yes — a small amount of mild dish soap on a damp cloth is fine. Just wipe it off afterwards with a clean damp cloth and never submerge the machine.

How do you get burnt batter off waffle iron plates?

Soften it first — either dab on cooking oil and wait five minutes, or steam it loose with a damp cloth under a closed lid — then wipe away. Avoid scraping with anything metal.

Why does my waffle maker smoke?

Usually leftover grease burning off. A proper clean fixes it; a quick season with a thin layer of oil before the next use helps too.

Can I put waffle maker plates in the dishwasher?

Only if they’re removable and the manufacturer says they’re dishwasher-safe. Fixed plates should never go near a dishwasher — you’d be submerging the electrics.
