Hi, I’m Jackie ๐
A sticky, crumb-caked waffle maker is the number-one reason these machines end up shoved to the back of a cupboard. The good news: cleaning one properly takes about five minutes if you do it right โ and not much longer even when batter’s baked on. Here’s exactly how I clean mine, including the bit most people get wrong (grinding at the non-stick coating with something sharp).
The one rule that saves your waffle maker
Never use metal, abrasive pads or harsh scrubbing on the plates. Waffle-maker plates are non-stick, and once you scratch that coating, batter sticks forever and the machine’s finished. Everything below is designed to lift the mess without attacking the coating.
Everyday clean (do this after each use)
- Unplug it and let it cool slightly โ warm, not hot. Cleaning while gently warm lifts grease far more easily than waiting until it’s stone cold. Never clean it plugged in or fully hot.
- Brush out the crumbs. A dry pastry brush or soft toothbrush sweeps loose crumbs out of the grid.
- Lift the grease with a damp cloth. Wipe the plates with a soft, damp (not dripping) cloth. For greasy spots, add a drop of dish soap to the cloth.
- Get into the squares with a cotton bud (Q-tip) or the corner of a cloth wrapped over a wooden skewer โ never metal.
- Wipe the outside with a damp cloth; dry everything before storing.
That’s it for 90% of cleanups.
Baked-on batter? The steam trick
When batter has cooked hard into the grid, don’t scrape โ soften it first:
- Let the plates cool to warm.
- Lay a damp paper towel across the plates and close the lid for 5โ10 minutes. The trapped steam softens the crust.
- Wipe away the loosened batter with a soft cloth.
- For stubborn bits, brush on a paste of baking soda + a little water, leave a few minutes, then wipe off with a damp cloth. Baking soda is mildly abrasive but safe on non-stick when used gently.
- Finish with a clean damp wipe to remove any residue.
Removable plates? Even easier
If your maker has removable plates (like the Cuisinart WAF-300), pop them out and check the manual โ many are dishwasher-safe. If yours are, that’s the whole job done. If not, wash them by hand in warm soapy water, rinse and dry fully before clicking them back in. (This is exactly why removable plates are worth prioritising when you buy โ see the best waffle maker guide.)
Dealing with sticky, greasy build-up
Over time a thin sticky film of oxidised oil builds up and makes waffles stick more. To reset it:
- Wipe the warm plates with a cloth dampened with a 50/50 warm water and white vinegar solution.
- Follow with a plain damp cloth to remove the vinegar.
- Dry fully, then lightly re-oil the plates before your next batch.
What not to do
- โ Don’t submerge an electric waffle maker in water (only removable plates, and only if the manual says so).
- โ Don’t use metal utensils, steel wool or scouring pads.
- โ Don’t use oven cleaner or harsh chemical degreasers.
- โ Don’t clean it plugged in or blazing hot.
- โ Don’t put it away damp โ trapped moisture causes odours and rust on hinges.
Keeping it clean longer (so waffles stop sticking)
- Use a batter with enough fat (melted butter or oil in the mix) โ lean batters stick more.
- Preheat fully before the first waffle.
- Lightly oil the plates with a brush or spray before the first pour of each session (not a thick pool โ that bakes into gunk).
- Don’t lift the lid too early โ a half-set waffle tears and leaves crumbs behind.
Do those four things and cleaning becomes a quick wipe instead of a battle.
Frequently asked questions
How do you clean a waffle maker with non-removable plates? Cool it to warm, brush out crumbs, wipe with a damp soapy cloth, and use the damp-paper-towel steam trick for baked-on batter. Never submerge it or scrub with metal.
Can you clean waffle maker plates in the dishwasher? Only if they’re removable and the manual says they’re dishwasher-safe. Fixed plates and the electric body must never go in the dishwasher.
How do I get baked-on batter off a waffle iron? Steam it soft with a damp paper towel closed inside for 5โ10 minutes, then wipe. For stubborn spots, use a gentle baking-soda paste.
Why does my waffle keep sticking? Usually not enough fat in the batter, not preheating fully, opening the lid too early, or a worn/dirty coating. Clean it properly and lightly oil before each session โ a full “why waffles stick” guide is coming on the blog.
